THE UNOFFICIAL COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL OF THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE MOUNT LOVCEN CHAPEL |
On 21 September 1925 the mortal remains of Prince-Bishop
Petar II Petrovich-Njegos, the greatest poet of the Serbs, were re-burried
in the rebuilt Chapel at the top of the Mount Lovcen in Montenegro. The
original Chapel was demolished by Austrian Army in 1916 as a sort of political
vendetta against the Serbian Nation.
The obverse of the Medal displays portrait of the Prince-Bishop done
after a oil portrait by Johann Boess. The reverse displays the Chapel itself.
The Chapel was rebuilt at the order of King Aleksandar I, who on his maternal side, descended from the same Montenegrin Reigning House of Petrovich-Njegosh. In 1973, at the orders of the Yugoslavian Communist dictator Tito, the Chapel was again demolished and in its place an ostentatious and monstrous "Mausoleum" erected. |
