Primary School “King Alexander
I” in New Belgrade
About the School
The Primary School “King
Alexander I” is located in New
Belgrade and it is one of the oldest
schools in Belgrade. The school was
founded in 1844 under the name
“Terazijska Primary School”, and it
was located in Decanska Street. The
new school building was raised in
1930 in the place of the old school.
The new school got the new name –
State School “King Alexander I”. The
school has worked under this name
until 1935. By the decision of the
Ministry of Education the school
becomes “Experimental National
School” on 8 February 1935. It was
the first experimental school in
Serbia.
In the war period 1941–1944 the
School was working with intermission
and in the difficult circumstances.
After the war the School gets the
name “Primary School No. 4”, and
from 1954 it becomes Primary School
“Zarko Zrenjanin”. Council for
Education and Culture of the
Municipality Stari Grad decided to
move the School to New Belgrade in
1954.
The School started to work in New
Belgrade with enrolment of pupils
from the new neighbourhood and
enrolling the pupils from the other
schools in the neighbourhood. Then
the School lost the status of
experimental school. The new School
building is located in Aleksinackih
rudara 22 Street. Finally, in
September 2004, the School gets its
old name Primary School “King
Alexander I”. During its 160-year
history, the School changed two
municipalities, three buildings and
five names.
There are 865 pupils in school
today and they are organised in 32
classes. There are 66 employees out
of whom 45 of them are working in
the teaching process. There are 16

Primary School “King Alexander
I” in Gornji Milanovac
About the School
The Primary School “King
Alexander I” is the School with the
longest tradition in Gornji
Milanovac. The School was the
founding origin of all other primary
schools in the city. The first
school in the city changed its name
several times during its history.
Before World War II, when the School
was built it carried the name of the
first King of Yugoslavia.
Celebration on the occasion of
building and opening of the new
School was attended by HM King
Alexander I Karadjordjevic in 1933.
There were numerous articles about
that event in the media and one in a
French newspaper. After the World
War Two the School carried the name
“The Primary School“. In 1964 the
School was divided into the First
and the Second Primary School, thus
the School changed name to “The
First Primary School”.
However, this name did not last
long. The School changed its name
again to the Primary School
“Partisan Battalion of Takovo” in
1969 on the occasion of twenty-five
anniversary of the liberation. In
the memory of its founder, HM King
Alexander I, the school staff
decided to re-establish the original
name of the School to the Primary
School “King Alexander I” on 18
December 2003.
What is unique about this school
is that teaching is taking place in
two buildings (for junior and senior
grades). The Primary School in
Brdjani, as well as the separate
classes in Lunjevica, Jablanica and
Semedrazi joined the School in 1983.
The School is also educating
children with special needs. In the
School there are two specialised
classes from first to eight grades
for children with special needs from
the municipality.
The School’s financial resources
are provided by the Ministry of
Education and Municipality of Gornji
Milanovac. The School also received
donations from government of Norway,
the Danish Council and the World
Bank.
This educational and pedagogical
institution is preparing students
for future life for more than a
century. Pupils and teachers are the
most important resources of this
School and they are the backbone of
the local community and society.
