FACES AND PLACES
Little Dejana Krajacic opens a present from one of her personate saviors,
Princess Katherine of Serbia, at the White Palace on 14th March. Dejana was
dying of a heart infection until she met Princess Katherine last Christmas, who
intervened in the plight of the little girl by successfully appealing for top
medical assistance on her behalf. Young Dejana has now fully recovered from the
operation, which was performed in Belgrade by Dr. Afkendios Kalangos - one of
the world's top heart surgeons.

„MY PAEDIATRICIAN” MAGAZINE, SPRING 2007
INTERVIEW
MOTHER BEFORE EVERYTHING ELSE
Dejana Krajačić is a five year old girl from Apatin who got endocarditis (a
heavy infection of the aortal valves). Everything in this story is about how
some strange circumstances can lead to happiness even in the gravest misfortune.
The happiness came with Princess Katherine Karadjordjevic, who saw Dejana during
her visit to the Children’s Hospital in Tirsova, on Christmas. Having found out
the condition that the girl was in, she selflessly took action. Princess
Katherine invited her friend Prof. Dr. Afksendios Kalangos, who managed to
obtain the donored tissue through his organization „A heart for All“. On
Epiphany, 19 January, the Professor came to Belgrade, operated on Dejana, who
has since successfully recovered and is now joyfully playing with her friends.
This was one of the reasons we went to The Royal Palace and spoke to this
wonderful woman about her humanitarian work.
The Lifeline Humanitarian Organization was founded in 1993 in London by
Princess Katherine Karadjordjevic, with the objective to provide help to all
those who needed it, regardless of religion or ethnic origin. During the past
years, her great effort and endeavour has resulted in providing massive
quantities of humanitarian aid. In Belgrade, in the beginning of August 2001 she
founded the Foundation of HRH Princess Katherine, with the task to continue and
expand the good tradition of humanitarian activities. On 27 January this year,
Princess Katherine received the special St. Sava award for humanitarian work and
endeavour. The award has certainly come to the right place.
HOW ARE YOUR HUMANITARIAN PROGRAMS DEVELOPED AND REALIZED?
Our Foundation has offices in New York, Chicago, Toronto, London, Athens and
Belgrade. The Foundation unifies all existing humanitarian activities in the
country and aims at helping everybody, in coordination with the NGOs – children
above all, the elderly, healthcare and social care institutions, the most
vulnerable categories of the population. Currently we are working on several
projects. One is the making of the Bone Marrow Bank. There are more and more
children who are ill with cancer. In order for the treatment to be successful,
among other things that are needed is the Bone Marrow Bank. I have made contacts
with friends in the UK, and I sincerely hope that our country will have such a
Bank. The other project is about improving our heart surgery conditions for
children. It is often necessary to perform a heart operation outside the
country, mostly because of the lack of adequate equipment, and not because our
doctors lack the talent. Our doctors are very talented and with a bit more
training to apply the latest techniques, there would be less need for the
children to go abroad to have their operations. My idea is to invest the money
so that our doctors can have their training abroad and so that they can visit
foreign medical centres, in order to save more lives of children in this
country. Our work is very solid. Our people have a lot of promises, without
solid results. That is why we do whatever we promise. Or, we speak little but we
do a lot. For me, it is a great privilege that I can help the people in our
country through my husband. And when they thank me, I feel the need to thank
them for giving me the opportunity to help them. My wish to help people is so
great, that my husband often gets angry with me, saying: “You can not help
people while they are sleeping”. And I know that, but when it is night time
here, it is day time in California and in Chicago, and people are working there,
so I want to be awake to finish every part of the job.
HOW DO YOU CHOOSE THE INSTITUTIONS THAT NEED HELP?
There is the Royal Medical Board that evaluates which institutions need help
more urgently than others. This Board has specialised doctors in many areas:
paediatricians, oncologists, cardiologists, pulmonologists and others. All the
hospitals in Serbia and not just in Belgrade, are sending us a report about the
conditions in their hospitals: how many doctors they have and of what
specialties, which kind of equipment they have, and what they can do. On the
basis of this, the Board analyses reports and reaches a decision about providing
help. We try to provide help evenly to everyone, but the help is needed by all.
The hospitals know that we are very active, so they do not restrain themselves
from asking for help, and we then try to meet their requests as much as
possible. I deliver aid based on the decisions of the Royal Medical Board and my
Foundation.
WHAT IS THE NICEST THING IN THIS BUSINESS FOR YOU?
The results! Seeing Dejana alive. Seeing somebody whose life you have saved,
even though you are not a doctor. That is a blessing. It can not be bought. It
can be only felt. Whole-heartedly.
DO YOU FEEL THAT HELPING OTHERS IS A PRIVILEGE?
It is a great privilege. Emotions are on the move when I see how much faith
and trust people have in me. I must admit that I am surprised. I have been doing
this job for over 15 years. I took the convoys many times to Bosnia, we have
been living in Serbia for almost six years, and it is amazing how much people
have started to trust me in such a short time. I am very happy and grateful for
that. I want the people to know that they are not alone, that they can count on
us, that we do not make promises, but rather we work. We are only interested in
human life and it is our responsibility. Human life, living and the general good
of the people – that is most important for me and my husband. We also want young
people to be educated, to have opportunities in life, and that is why my husband
has the Foundation for Education and Culture. This Foundation, among other
things, provides scholarships, and has opened a Career Centre. People in our
country are not demanding. All they want is a normal life.
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN A SITUATION THAT YOU CAN’T HELP SOMEBODY?
I never give up. I believe in God and in miracles. I believe in the strength
that God gives me to help others. When you want to do good things, God gives you
the strength to feel good. I think that people without energy are in fact those
who are not trying to help. The energy does not come first. First comes the aid.
First one gives and does not take. And when you give, you do not expect anything
in return, because if you give something from the bottom of your heart, you will
be rewarded, and that should be enough. If you do something good and expect
something in return, then it is not sincere and it is better to do nothing at
all, because in this dishonest way you can make more damage than good. The
opportunity to give help is a gift of God, and people should not abuse it. I am
sure that there is not a single person in the world who can not help. Some
things can not be paid with money. A smile does not cost anything. A few kind
words to a patient do not cost anything. There are so many things that can not
be paid with money, but that mean so much to the other person. People who say –
I wish I could help, but I do not know how to do it, are not sincere, because,
if they looked around they could see that the world needs them. Maybe they are
not ready to assume that kind of responsibility. People should not be living in
an illusion; they have to be realistic, honest, caring, and loving. Nobody
should forget that we have come to this world to spend a very limited time here,
so every life is a mission. We must not waste time. People should be asking how
they can help others, every day, and God will help them, because we are his
hands on the Earth. People are waiting to be happy, and at the same time, they
are not doing anything good. You can not be happy if you do not make others
happy. You can not be happy if you just think about yourself for the whole day.
Some people become their own worst enemies.
WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE TO OUR READERS?
People must be aware that their behaviour is reflected on their children. All
parents must remember that the next generation of our people is in their hands.
What our country will look like in the next 10 or 20 years depends mainly on the
parents. Observe the reactions of your children, their behaviour, and invest in
them. Teach them to value their life and the lives of others, to respect people
who do good deeds, to be full of self-esteem, to respect their parents and
grandparents, and to love them. Enjoy life with your children.

ANTRFILE 1
A MOTHER IS JUST A MOTHER
I feel like a mother in our country. I am aware that, when a child is in the
hospital, every minute is important. When a child goes to the hospital, every
mother must feel safe that the child will be provided with the proper medicines,
that there is the needed equipment, that her child is surrounded by the best
doctors, because a mother is just a mother, and she only wants her child to be
well. And I, as every mother, must find a way to help our children.
ANTRFILE 2
PREVENTIVE MEDICINE
We should be working more on preventive medicine. We spend a lot of money on
the consequence rather than the cause, and many illnesses could be prevented if
they are acted on sooner. Preventive medicine has an advantage, and that is that
the consequences and the risks of illnesses would be much smaller. My idea is to
create mobile teams who would visit primary schools and check the children’s
eyesight, hearing, and speech. There are many ideas, but there is not so much
time. Unfortunately, my day only lasts 24 hours, and I would need many more
hours.
ANTRFILE 3
GRANDMOTHERS AND GRANDFATHERS
I am very attached to elderly people. Grandmothers and grandfathers are very
important in the growing up of children. They are sincere and carry within their
beings, our tradition and culture, which they must pass on to younger
generations. Children should spend as much time as possible with their
grandmothers and grandfathers, especially when parents are preoccupied with
work. The children can learn a lot from their grandparents, as much as they can
learn from their parents, if not more. Grandmothers and grandfathers have more
time, love, knowledge and patience.

DVE PRINCEZE NA KRALJEVSKOM DVORU
U prethodnom broju smo objavili priču »Bila jednom jedna princeza« - o
zahvaljujući nesebičnom naporu Princeze Katarine Karađorđević i dr. Afksendiosa
Kalangosa.
učinila ogroman napor i dovela jednog od najboljih svetskih kardiohirurga, dr.
Afksendiosa Kalangosa.
zahvaljujem dr. Kalangosu i dr. Idi Jovanović, koji su timskim radom spasili
Dejani život. Želim maloj Dejani i njenoj porodici puno sreće, oni će uvek biti
u mom srcu.

TWO PRINCESSES AT THE ROYAL PALACE
In the previous number we had published the story “There once was one
Princess” about five years old girl Dejana Krajacic from Apatin, whose life was
saved thanked to unselfish efforts of Princess Katherine and Dr. Afksendios
Kalangos. Dejana get an infection of the heart, which had attacked and destroyed
the left valve of her heart. Diagnosis was made by physicians in Sombor, and
they urgently referred her to the Hospital for children in Tirshova in Belgrade,
where she was treated with the strongest doses of antibiotics. Regardless of
that, the infection was spreading rapidly, and possibility of very serious
complications existed. During the visit to the Clinic for Children at the
Christmas, Princess met Dejana. Deeply touched, Princess made a huge effort and
she brought one of the best cardio surgeons, Dr Afksendios Kalangos. He came to
Belgrade in private plane with donated tissue, which was assured by his
foundation “Hart for two”, and he operated the girl. Dejana has recovered well
after the surgery. She came with her parents visit to Crown Prince Aleksander
II, and Princess Katherine. Princess was very exited:
-I can not describe the happiness which I feel today, when I see Dejana alive
and well. Life is a mission worth saving, and this is a reason why we are here.
I most warmly thank to Dr. Kalangos and to Dr. Ida Jovanovic, who saved the life
of Dejana with team work. I wish to little Dejana and to her family a lot of
luck, they will be always in my heart.
BLIC ŽENA, 09.04.2007
DOBILI SMO BITKU ZA DEJANINO SRCE
PRINCEZA KATARINA I PRESTOLONASLEDNIK ALEKSANDAR II UVERILI SU KRAJAČIĆE DA
SU ČUDA MOGUĆA
Dejani je hitno bila potrebna transplantacija srca. Lekari su joj
prognozirali sedam
kenjkava sve do tog prokletog decembra.
aortu i razorila levi srčani zalistak. Sve se dešavalo strahovitom brzinom. Do
hitno potrebna transplantacija srca.
organa u Briselu. - Bili smo jako zabrinuti kada smo to čuli.
domaćih kardio-hirurga, dr Ilić, dr Hercog i prof. dr Ida Jovanović, uz veliku
Anja, Dejanina starija sestra.
igračkama i svojoj porodici.
sam nacrtala Hram svetog Save, sunce i dva srca. To je od mene za uspomenu na
naše zajedničko čudo - objasnila je mala Dejana.
BLIC ZENA ,09.04.2007.
WE HAVE WON THE BATTLE FOR DEJANA’S HEART
PRINCESS KATHERINE AND PRINCE ALEXANDER HAVE CONVINCED THE KRAJACIC FAMILY
THAT MIRACLES ARE POSSIBLE
Dejana urgently needed a heart transplant. The doctors gave her just 7 days
to live. The Karadjordjevic Royal Family gave her a new life.(Bogojavljanje) is
the biggest holiday for the Krajacic family. On January 19 this year, it has
been celebrated with bells and whistles, because it was the happiest day for
Dusanka and Dejan, from Apatin, Serbia. Their 5 year old daughter Dejana then
won a battle for life. Everything started with a seemingly unthreatening
pneumonia in December last year, and her condition got worse in just a few
weeks. The doctors diagnosed a very serious, endocarditic condition of the
heart.
- Dejana has always been a cheerful and lively girl. She has never been ill,
and she has never complained, until that cursed December. Then it all started
going downhill, says mommy Dusanka. – The doctors have told us that she has a
heart infection which has struck the aorta and damaged the left valve.
Everything was happening very fast. All the news that reached us were bad, and
then we found out that our little girl needed an urgent heart transplant.
A MIRACLE WILL HAPPEN
Dusanka and Dejan felt powerless at that time. They did not know how to help
their beloved one, but on that very day, Princess Katherine Karadjordjevic met
them in the hallway of the Children’s Hospital in Belgrade. - Every year on
Christmas, I visit hospitals in our country. And I did that this year, too, says
Princess Katherine as she caresses little Dejana, who had come to the White
Palace to visit the Royal Family. – When I came to the Children’s Hospital, I
was informed about Dejana’s case. I was extremely shaken up. I came out to the
hallway and saw a woman whose face was expressing deep sorrow and pain. I asked
the doctors who she was, and they told me it was Dejana’s mother. I approached
her and said: “Do not worry. It’s Christmas today and I am certain that God will
perform a miracle for your child”.
The team of doctors at Tirsova Street in Belgrade reached a conclusion that
the only solution for little Dejana was an urgent surgical intervention, in
which the damaged capillary would be replaced by a part of the heart tissue,
which could be obtained only from the Bank of tissue and body part donors,
located in Brussels. - We were very concerned when we heard that. We knew we
could not have access to that tissue, as that right only applies to EU member
countries, says papa Dejan. – At that time, however, the Royal Family jumped in
to help. The next day, Prince Alexander called Dr. Afksendios Kalangos, director
of the Cardio-Surgical University Clinic in Geneva, and asked him to help. - I
saw how much Princess Katherine worried for the life of little Dejana. On that
day, we were all resolved to give our maximum. We called Dr. Kalangos, who, at
that time, was in Moscow, says Prince Alexander. - We asked him to come to
Belgrade immediately, which he did.
SEVEN DAYS LEFT TO LIVE
The doctors gave Dejana only seven more days left to live. But, the team of
domestic cardio-surgeons, made up of Dr. Ilic, Dr. Hercog, and Prof. Dr. Ida
Jovanovic, managed to find the life-saving tissue, with the great help of Dr.
Kalangos. - Everything depended on it, because Dejana’s condition was getting
worse day by day, says papa Dejan. – But, a miracle has really happened.
Precisely on (Bogojavljanje), Dr. Kalangos arrived to Belgrade with the tissue
he had brought in a container, at -83 degrees Celsius. - The doctors started
operating on the girl as soon as the tissue had arrived. It is hard to describe
how we felt while the surgery was taking place. Everything was so uncertain,
says mommy Dusanka. When the doctors came out of the operating room, they
yelled: “Dejana’s heart is ticking again!” - We jumped for joy, as the very
tough days of struggle had finally been put behind us, says Anja, Dejana’s older
sister, cheerfully. Only two weeks after the operation, Dejana was released from
the hospital, and, as soon she regained some of her strength, she wanted to
personally thank the Royal Family. - We are extremely grateful to all people who
have unconditionally helped us. With people like that, it was much easier to go
through the hell we have been to, says Dejan. Little Dejana, named after her
father, with an appearance of an angel, approached Princess Katherine and Prince
Alexander in a pink skirt, hugged them as strongly as she could, and spoke
softly: - I wish to say a huge Thank You to Princess Katherine and Dr. Kalangos
for saving my life. Today, less than 3 months after the operation, Dejana feels
great. She has returned to her toys and her family.
MEMORY OF LIFE
As a sign of her gratitude, little Dejana prepared 2 special gifts for the
Royal Family. The first is a drawing, and the second is a golden cross. I drew a
picture of me holding hands with Princess Katherine and Prince Alexander, and in
the background, I drew the Saint Sava temple, the Sun and 2 hearts. That comes
from me, in memory of our common miracle, explained little Dejana.

SRCE KUCA PUNIM ŽIVOTOM
ZA DEJANU KRAJAČIĆ PRIJEM U KRALjEVSKOM DVORU
Njihova Kraljevska Visočanstva Prestolonaslednik Aleksandar II i Princeza
Katarina, 14-tog marta primili su, u Kraljevskom dvoru, petogodišnju Apatinku
Dejanu Krajačić, njene roditelje i sestru.
Katarina.
APATINKA DEJANA KRAJAČIĆ NA PRIJEMU U KRALjEVSKOM DVORU
samouverena i nasmejana, uz svoje roditelje i sestru, petogodišnja Apatinka
Dejana Krajačić potrčala je ka Njihovim Kraljevskim Visočanstvima- Princezi
Katarini i prestolonasledniku Aleksandru II, pala im u zagrljaj i izustila reči
banke tkiva i organa u Briselu.
Kalangosa, a on
Tokom
četvorosatne intervencije, uz asistenciju dr. Slobodana Ilića, načelnika
kardiohirurgije, dr. Kalangos je očistio inficirano tkivo i ugradio deo srčanog
zaliska i početni deo aorte.
zdravstveno stanje neprekidno brinula i kraljevska porodica.
Kalangosu i dr. Idi
Želim maloj Dejani i
oboleli zalistak Dejaninog srca (homograf).Iz ruku trajnog prijatelja i velikog

DEJANA KRAJACIC FROM APATIN TOOK PART ON THE RECEPTION AT THE ROYAL PALACE
HEART TICKING WITH LIFE
Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander II and Crown Princess Katherine
have received at the Royal Palace on March 14 the five year old girl from
Apatin, Dejana Krajacic as well as her parents and sister. That life is a
mission worth saving, has been proven by great team work which resulted in the
saving of little Dejana’s life, and has been spotted by the camera lens of a
photographer. - They will be in my heart forever, and this is one of the
happiest days of my life, said Her Royal Highness Princess Katherine at the
reception of the Krajacic family.
LIFE – MISSION WORTH TO BE PROTECTED
Two months after very hard operation she had been submitted, in the hall of
the White Palace, self-confident and smiling 5 years old Dejana from Apatin,
together with her parents and her sister run toward their Royal Highnesses –
Princess Catherine and Crown Prince Alexander II., fell in their arms and
uttered thankful words for their help to gain the fight for life itself, despite
her hard illness.
First sanitary difficulties began by little Dejana in December of the last
year, when doctors in Sombor found an infection on the heart which had attacked
the aorta and destroyed the left heart valve. It was very urgent and she was
brought to the University clinic for children in Tirsova Street in Belgrade
where she has been treated with the strongest doses of antibiotics. But the
infection has been spreading very rapidly and it was a sign for doctors to react
urgently – to replace the destroyed blood vessel with a part of heart tissue
that could be only brought from donator of tissues and organs bank in Brussels.
If Dejana’s misfortune in that moment was the fact that our country is not a
member of European Union (and it is also not allowed for us to use tissues and
organs from that bank), she had luck on the other side. Actually, on that day
Princess Katherine was traditionally visiting for Christmas little patients in
Tirsova hospital and she saw Dejana whose sanitary condition was very grave.
Princess was deeply moved by the whole situation of little girl and her first
reaction was to call her friend dr. Kalangos who also many times before came to
Belgrade on her call and made couple of very complicated surgical handles. At
the moment Princess informed him about little Dejana he was in Los Angeles and
has been operating two children but he immediately promised that girl will be
operated. He spoke then with our cardio-surgeons dr. Ilic, Dr. Hercog and Prof.
dr. Jovanovic in order to become as much information about that case as
possible. Dr. Kalangos and his personal assistant dr. Andre from the Foundation
“Heart for two people” succeeded and found the salutary tissue in United States.
The urgent operation was fixed on 22nd January, but Princess was frightened with
real threat that little Dejana maybe will not undergo. She phoned her close
friend and requested that he immediately send a private plane to Poland, pick
dr. Kalangos there up and he personally brought donated tissue to Belgrade,
exactly on Day of Theophany at 7 p.m. In Tirsova hospital everything had already
been prepared for that hard operation. During these four hours the operation has
being lasting, with assistance of dr. Slobodan Ilic, head of cardio surgery, dr.
Kalangos was cleaning the infected tissue and built into the heart part of heart
valve and first part of aorta. The most difficult phase of operation was
building coronal arteries into the heart, which minimal injury could be fatal
and cause infarct. Dejana’s heart started to pulsate normally two hours after
the operation. That was the fifth night of that week that he spent awake below
sick children in USA, Turkey, Poland and by little Dejana. After the fifth day
being operated Dejana left the department of intensive care and as well her
parents also the Royal family constantly took care about Dejana’s sanitary
condition. When they met at the White Palace after two months, all were deeply
touched.
-I can’t describe my happiness when I see Dejana today hale and hearty. This
is one of the most important moments in my life. Life is mission worth to be
protected and this is the reason that we are here. I simply knew that Dejana
must survive and I was decided to rescue her life. Deep hearty thanks to Dr.
Kalangos and dr. Ida Jovanovic who rescued Dejana’s life team working. I wish to
Dejana and her family luck. They will always stay in my heart and I first of all
I am thankful to God and His Miracle – emphasized Princess. Dr. Afksendios
Kalangos did not take part on the reception of the family Krajacic but they
phoned him that could be also heard by many journalists. He said that it was
very a very emotional moment for him and he felt tears in his eyes because of
happiness that Dejana was getting better. He said that for surgical handle are
also equally meritorious his colleagues from the clinic in Tirsova street, their
help and assistance, and Dejana, very excited, succeeded to say great “Thank
you” to the doctor who helped her in very hard illness. Buying part of a heart
on his own as substitution for sick heart valve of Dejana’s heart, he showed
that he was also great humanist. Dejana’s friend for all her life and fighter
for her life, Princess Katherine, gave her a special present – Cinderella’s
coach as addition to Dejana’s favorite toy – little horse that she received also
from Princess as a Christmas gift. Life is really mission worth to be protected!

poslednji čas izbavili Princeza Katarina i plemeniti doktor Kalangos.
to nije bilo moguće.
čak i dve princeze - Katarina i mala Dejana. Uz to, sam čin spasavanja

PRIČA 0 PRINCEZI I DEVOJČICI
Svedok, 20.03.2007
Princ Aleksandar II i princeza Katarina Karađorđević ugostili porodicu
Dejane Krajačić, devojčice kojoj su pre dva meseca spasili život
Ozarena širokim osmehom, očiju uprtih u Princezu Katarinu i Princa Aleksandra
Tokom svog tradicionalnog božićnjeg obilaska bolnica i sirotišta, Princeza
nad posteljom svoje mezimice.
me nije sprečilo da dignem ruke i odustanem.
Afksendiosa Kalangosa, direktora kardiohirurgije Univerzitetske klinike u
Kalangosom obaveštavajući ga o zdravstvenom stanju male pacijentkinje. I baš na
najteži deo operacije - ugrađivanje koronarnih arterija čija i najmanja povreda
POKLONI
Susret u Belom dvoru protekao je u svečarskoj atmosferi. Presrećni što je
njihova Dejana živa, vedra i vesela devojčica, porodica Krajačić uručila je
Princezi Katarini poklone.

Svetog Save i veliko novo srce.
On se porodici Karađorđević,
maloj Dejani i Dejanu i Dušanki Krajačić obratio telefonskim putem.
dvoje" pronašao spasonosno srčano tkivo u Americi, a potom i operisao devojčicu.
- Plašili smo se da neće
dožive-ti termin operacije, 22. januar.
Njeni roditelji i

HEART TRANSPLANTATION FOR LITTLE
DEJANA
MODERATOR:
At the very end of tonight’s show
Hello Belgrade we will tell you a very moving story. It began startlingly and it
is moving because it is about a child, and we know that now are the times when
such terrible illnesses do not avoid even the youngest ones. In that moment we
are most sensitive and we will do anything to help. The biggest problem in
Dejana’s situation was that we are not member of EU and we didn’t have rights to
use tissues and organs from the donor bank in Brussels. Well, Crown Princess
Katherine’s Foundation helped and an organ was found in America, the operation
was performed by Dr Kalangos, one of the best cardio surgeons worldwide. Dejana
Krajacic lives a normal life now. She is very happy and everyone around her is
joyful.
REPORTER, Ljubinka Dobrosavljev:
Meeting Dejana, her parents and
Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander II and Crown Princess Katherine
was very emotional. On that occasion we heard the story of how Princess
Katherine decided to help little Dejana.
HRH CROWN PRINCE ALEXANDER II:
That was a very interesting
situation. It was on Christmas Day, when my wife goes every year to visit
Belgrade hospitals, and she was in the hospital in Tirsova Street this time.
When she came back home, she said that she saw little Dejana and her family. My
sons were here then and she told us that the situation is very critical and that
she wants to do something about that, she desperately wanted to help them.
HRH CROWN PRINCESS KATHERINE:
Sorry, but for us it is miracle,
God was here for us and for Dejana’s family.

HEART OF THE OPERATED GIRL BEATS
PERFECTLY
The five year old girl, Dejana
Krajacic, is successfully recovering after the operation by Dr Kalangos, who
operated her on the appeal of Princess Katherine Karadjordjevic .
For the first time after the
difficult operation on the heart, the five year old girl Dejana met with Princes
Katherine and with Prince Alexander Karadjordjevic yesterday. Accompanied by her
parents and sister, the little girl thanked the Family Karadjordjevic, on their
help and intervention.
In a touching atmosphere, Dejana
gave Princess Katherine a drawing in which she painted The Royal Couple, the
Church of Saint Sava, and a new big heart. Her parents also thanked Dr. Ida
Jovanovic who took care of Dejana during her stay in the University Children’s
Clinic in Tirsova Street. Everybody agreed to the fact that the girl from Apatin
would not have been saved if Dr. Kalangos could not have operated her. He spoke
with The Family Karadjordjevic, little Dejana and to Duska Krajacic on a
conference telephone call.
“I promise that we will cooperate
in the future. We will help with creating a cardiovascular team, trained for the
most demanding operations. At the same time I announce that we will send to the
Hospital in Tirsova two new necessary devices, one of them is valued at 300.000
Swiss Francs, and the second one valued at 250.000 euros”- explained this famous
and well– respected Director of the Cardio Surgery at the University Clinic in
Geneva.
As the parents of Dejana said, she
does not feel any pain now, and she goes once a week for a check-up in Tirsova.
At Christmas, prognoses for this
girl were saying that she has few days remaining to live, because the infection
had hit the aorta and destroyed the left heart valve. When Princess Katherine
heard of this family misfortune, she immediately called her friend Doctor
Kalangos, who through his foundation “Heart for two”, find heart tissue, and
after that operated the girl.
“We were afraid that this girl
would not survive until the date of operation, 22nd January. I insisted that Dr
Kalangos come to Belgrade on 19th January. He told me that it is impossible,
because he is in Poland, and that there are no flights to Belgrade. Then I asked
another friend to arrange a private plane which will pick up Dr Kalangos, who
operated Dejana on the same day”, said Princess Katherine Karadjordjevic.
Dejana’s heart now functions
normally and she is playing with her friends like before she became ill. Her
parents and the medical team believe the she will live her childhood without
worrying.

Two months after the operation,
Dejana Krajacic met Princess Katherine Karadjordjevic, who brought to Belgrade
one of the best cardio surgeons worldwide, who operated the girl from Apatin in
January. Dejana’s heart was attacked by a serious infection, and doctors were
giving her only seven days to live.
How did Dejana win this battle for
life?
The heart of Dejana was attacked
with a serious infection. Thanks to Princess Katherine and Dr Kalangos, the
heart beats again, full of life.
At the door of the Blue Salon of
The Royal Palace, came the little girl with the look of an angel, in pink dress,
coat and boots yesterday. Self-confident and smiling, five year old Dejana
Krajacic fell into an embrace with Princess Katherine. That was her first
meeting with the people who helped this girl from Apatin beat this terrible
heart disease.
At the end of last year, Dejana got
an infection which attacks the aorta and which destroyed her left heart valve,
and she desperately needed to have that part of her heart replaced. The initial
diagnosis was given in Sombor, where she was first being treated, and they
urgently sent her to the Hospital in Tirsova Street in Belgrade.
The consortium of doctors in
Tirsova diagnosed that the only solution is to perform an operation in which the
destroyed valve will be replaced by new heart tissue which could only be
obtained from the donor bank of tissue in Brussels. It was a misfortune for
Dejana, because our country doesn’t have the right to import tissue or organs
from the organ bank in Brussels, because we are not members of EU. But, she was
fortunate on the other hand. Exactly on that day, Princess Katherine
Karadjordjevic, was on her traditional Christmas tour through the Clinic in
Tirsova Street, when she met Dejana.
The knowledge that the prognosis of
the doctors was giving Dejana less than seven days to live alarmed Princess to
immediately call her friend Dr. Afksendios Kalangos, Director of Cardio Surgery
of University Clinic in Geneva.
After talking to our cardio
surgeons Dr Ilic, Dr Hercog, and Prof. Dr. Ida Jovanovic, who explained to him
every detail about this case, Dr. Kalangos, with his close assistant Dr. Andrea
from the Foundation “Heart for two”, succeeded in finding the tissue that was
needed. Meanwhile, Dejana’s condition was worsening from day to day. The team of
cardiologists from Tirsova Hospital was continually informing Dr. Kalangos about
the girl’s condition and the operation was scheduled for 22nd January.
Frightened with the real threat that the child will not survive until the day of
the operation, Princess Katherine called her close friends who immediately sent
a private jet to pick up Dr Kalangos who was in Poland at that moment. Dr
Kalangos arrived in Belgrade on the big Orthodox holiday on 19th January at 7pm,
with the precious tissue which was settled in a box the size of an average TV,
in a container at the temperature of 83 degrees. He successfully passed all
bureaucracy, and he went straight from the airport to operate the girl. In
Tirsova everything was ready for the operation in which Dr Slobodan Ilic, Head
of Surgery assisted Dr Kalangos. Two weeks after the operation, the girl was
released from hospital and only check-ups remind her of that operation.
Yesterday at The Royal Palace,
after the hugging and tears she sow the Prince, Princess and herself holding
hands, Saint Sava Church, a sun and two hearts, but also a horse which was a
gift to her from the Princess.
Another gift for the Princess was a
gold cross.
Dejana unpacked her gift
impatiently and she exclaimed that it is a lovely present. Inside was a big
Cinderella with carriage.
-It’s such a relief when you are a
parent of the sick child and you have such wonderful people, who want to help
you, said her mother Dusanka through tears.
Even though Dr Kalangos was not
present; they spoke with him by telephone.
- I am very happy because Dejana
feels well. Without the colleges from Tirsova, this operation would have been
impossible. This for me is a very emotional moment, and I must admit that my
eyes are full of tears, said Dr Kalangos.
Dejana reacted to these words; she
came to telephone and said:
-Thank you Dr Kalangos, and to the
Princess too, because you helped me with my serious illness.
Big heart of the doctor
Dr Kalangos, of Greek origin,
showed that he is a big humanist and friend, because he bought a homograph, part
of heart tissue with which he replaced the sick valve. Thanks to him, his
Foundation “Heart for two” will help in supplying the Cardio Surgery in
University Children’s Hospital in Tirsova Street in Belgrade. By the end of the
year two new devices will arrive which will make a great number of operations
possible; one device costs 300.000 Swiss franks, and the other one 250.000
Euros. Besides that, they have prepared an extra 100.000$ for renovating rooms
in building, where the new equipment will be placed.

The meeting was so emotional, like
the first they time met. But this time it was not as dramatic. Dejana came to
The Royal Palace to thank Princess Katherine.
Reporter: Marina Stevanovic: How
did you imagine Princess like this, or in high hills and ball dress?
Little Dejana saw Princess
Katherine in an elegant suit, with tears in her eyes. In this meeting everybody
cried, Prince Alexander, Dejana’s parents, journalists, photographers..
Are you exited?
Dejana:
I am not….
Reporter:
How can you not be, look how many
cameras, photographers?
Dejana:
I think they are from the whole
country.
Reporter:
For all of them, a modest but very
serious speech followed.
Dejana:
They helped me with a hard disease,
and I must thank them very much.
Reporter:
During December 2006, little Dejana
got a serious infection on her heart which attacked the aorta and the left heart
valve.
When Her Royal Highness Princess
Katherine met the girl, she had only seven days to live. Deeply touched with
her condition, she brought one of the best cardio surgeons, Dr Askendoijos
Kalangos to Belgrade. Dejana was successfully operated on 19th January, and she
was fully recovered after two weeks, and released from hospital.
Princess Katharine Karadjordjevic:
Sorry but she is a miracle for us.
God was here for Dejana and for the whole family.
I can not describe the happiness
when I see Dejana alive and healthy. This is the one of the happiest days of my
life, because it proves that pure intensions are always regarded. Life is a
mission, worth saving, and this is reason why we are here.
Little Dejana truly brought joy in
my heart, pointed out Princess Katherine in her speech. Their Royal Highnesses
gave a special gift to Dejana – a Cinderella carriage, which she can combine
with her favourite little toy horse, which she received on Christmas from
Princess Katherine. Dejana also gave a present to them, it was her artistic
work. Many things were on that drawing, even two hearts. Which one of these two
is yours?
Dejana:
Mine is this little one, and this
one is for Princess Katherine and the Prince.
Reporter:
It means two hearts one next to
another. One is for Princess and Prince together; what is the name of your
Prince?
Dejana:
Ognjen.

I suppose that you are speechless?
Dušanka Krajacic:
Yes, you can not describe it with
words, you need to experience that, you can not believe what might happen, and
how much people can help to you, this is really amazing.
Prof. dr Ida Jovanovic, doctor of
University Clinic in Belgrade:
Divine, this is one divine example
of humanity, professionalism, one of the example practices of professionals for
everyone who puts this profession to shame sometimes, how with a big heart you
can do much without money, only with a nice smile.
Journalist:
Five year old Dejana from Apatin
had the fortune to experience a fairytale. Princess Katherine knows that in
Serbia there are more sick children, and because of that, she announced a new
humanitarian action. Almost a million Euros will be contributed from local and
foreign donators, to obtain modern equipment, with which doctors from Serbia,
and from abroad, will be able to cure children.

Gift of Life to little Dejana from Princess Katherine of Yugoslavia
It is possible, even in our times, a true story of pain to become a beautiful
fairy tale with happy end! Such a story we received in our journalist mail by
letter on March 14th from Belgrade, along with the photograph of little Dejana
Krajacic, who was welcomed by TRH Prinve Alexander kai Princess Katherine along
with Prof Dr Ida Jovanovic at the Royal Palace in Belgrade. And here is the
story:
In December 2006, little Dejana contracted a heart infection which hit the
aorta and critically damaged the left heart valve. The disease was diagnosed in
Sombor, where Dejana was initially treated, and she was immediately transferred
to the University Children’s Hospital in Belgrade where she was treated with the
highest doses of antibiotics. The infection was spreading fast and the threat of
complications was increasing every minute. She desperately needed a new valve in
her heart.
When Princess Katherine met Dejana on Christmas day while visiting the
children’s hospital she had only a few days left in her life. Her situation was
serious.
Deeply touched with her condition Princess Katherine made an urgent appeal
and brought one of the world’s top heart surgeons Dr. Afkendios Kalangos in an
emergency private aircraft to Belgrade.
Dejana was successfully operated on 19 January and after two weeks she fully
recovered and was released from the hospital.
“I can’t express the joy that I feel when I see Dejana alive and well here
with us today. This is one of the best days in my life. Life is very precious
and saving a life is a very emotional thing. I knew that little Dejana had to
survive and I was determined to save her life. I warmly thank Dr. Kalangos, Dr.
Ida Jovanovic and everyone at the Tirshova Hospital; it was a great team working
together. I wish little Dejana and her family all the very best, they will
always be in my heart and I thank God for this great miracle” – emphasized Crown
Princess Katherine.
During the reception a conference call took place to Dr. Kalangos, who
thanked Their Royal Highnesses for giving him the opportunity to save the life
of little Dejana. He promised he will continue helping the children of Serbia.
Their Royal Highnesses gave Dejana a special gift, a Cinderella carriage for
her favourite toy, a little horse she received from Princess Katherine on
Christmas day.
