Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vuk Jeremic and Prince Alexander Karadjordjevic
have laid wreaths on the monuments of King Alexander I Karadjordjevic and French
Minister for Foreign Affairs Louis Barthou, who were assassinated 75 years ago
on this day. This is a day of grief for Serbia and France said Jeremic and
reminded us that shots at King Alexander I, who was the victim of fascism and
ustaschi terror, have also been shots at European Peace and our Country.

Commemoration of the Assassination in Marseilles
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vuk Jeremic and HRH Crown Prince Alexander
Karadjordjevic have laid wreaths on the monuments to King Alexander I
Karadjordjevic and French Minister for Foreign Affairs of France Louis Barthou,
who were assassinated 75 years ago on this day. Serbian ambassador to France, HE
Mr. Dusan Batakovic was also present at the commemoration of tragic events of
1934 in Marseilles. King Alexander and minister Barthou have been assassinated
as soon as they have come to Marseilles where they were expected to reinforce
alliance of the two countries against the German fascism.

President Tadic has laid a wreath yesterday on the grave of King Alexander I
Karadjordjevic in Oplenac, commemorating 75 years of his assassination during
the attempt in Marseilles, which was organised by Croatian branch Ustaschi and
Macedonian VMRO.

Boris Tadic at the grave of King Alexander
Belgrade – The President of Serbia, Boris Tadic has laid a wreath yesterday
in Oplenac in the St George Church on the grave of King Alexander who has been
assassinated exactly 75 years ago in Marseilles. The ceremony has been done with
the highest Government Honour during the presence of President Boris Tadic, the
delegation of the Serbian Army with Minister Sutanovac as their head and the
Chief of the Army of Serbia General Miloje Milojevic. Prince Alexander
Karadjordjevic II, with his wife Princess Katherine and his son Prince Philip
have also participated to the commemoration, with other relative from the
Karadjordjevic Family, representatives of the Church and many people who came to
show their respect. The inauguration of the exhibition of the “Statesman and
Warrior Path of King Alexander I” has been organised in the house of King Peter
I Karadjordjevic. During the opening ceremony, Minister Dragan Sutanovac has
announced that King Alexander I has left a permanent mark in the History of the
entire Balkans.
- Serbia is coming back today on the road of political integration laid by
King Alexander – said Sutanovac Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vuk Jeremic,
together with Crown Prince Alexander II Karadjordjevic, who arrived in the
afternoon to Oplenac, have laid a wreath in Marseilles on the monument of King
Alexander I.
- On the same day, 75 years ago, the King Unifier Alexander I has been
assassinated. He felt down as the first victim of fascism and the Croatian
branch Ustaschi terror. The shots to the King Alexander have been a shots at the
European Peace. King Alexander was a man with deep respect for his people, for
tradition and with a great vision of prosperity through the unification and
integrations. He was the first true European at the head of or country – said

75th anniversary commemorating the assassination of King Alexander I
Karadjordjevic
The anniversary commemorating the tragic death of King Alexander I
Karadjordjevic, who was assassinated 75 years ago in Marseilles, while he was on
an official visit to France, has been organised yesterday in the Royal Mausoleum
in Oplenac.
President of Serbia, Boris Tadic has laid a wreath yesterday in Oplenac in
the St George Church at the grave of King Alexander. The ceremony has been
served with the highest State Honours within the presence of the members of
diplomatic corps and members of Karadjordjevic Family, led by Prince Alexander
Karadjordjevic. The Holy Liturgy and the dirge were served by Bishop Jovan of
Sumadija and Bishop Nikolaj from Alaska.
The minister for Foreign Affairs, Vuk Jeremic has laid a wreath on the
monuments to King Alexander I Karadjordjevic and French Minister for Foreign
Affairs of France Louis Barthou, who was assassinated on the same occasion.
Wreath has been laid by the Serbian Ambassador in France Mr Dusan Batakovic,
Prince Alexander Karadjordjevic and his son Philip, as well as the French
Prefect of the Provence Region Michel Sapin, as a representative of Marseilles
and of the Union of French and Serbian Soldiers “Peter I”.
King Alexander was born in Cetinje in 1888., as the second child of Princess
Zorka and King Peter I Karadjordjevic. After the abdication of his older brother
Djordje in 1909, he becomes the Crown Prince. Due to the illness of King Peter,
who withdraws from his royal duty on 24 June 1914, Crown Prince Alexander became
the Regent of the Kingdom of Serbia. The Union of Serbian, Croats and Slovenian
in one country was declared by Alexander on 1 December 1918. After King Peter I
death, Alexander becomes the King of the Kingdom of Serbian, Croats and
Slovenians, and change its name to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929. During his
official visit to France on October, 9th 1934, King Alexander was assassinated
in Marseilles. Nine days after that, on 18 October, his remains have been laid
in the Family Mausoleum in Oplenac, Topola, where they remained until today.

The State Government of Serbia and Karadjordjevic Family
Speaker: The Serbian Government and the Karadjordjevic Family have
commemorated today in Oplenac, in Topola, 75 years of the assassination of King
Alexander I Karadjordjevic.
Reporter: President Boris Tadic, the delegation of the Serbian Army with
Minister Sutanovac as their head and the Chief of the Army of Serbia General
Miloje Milojevic, and the Diplomatic Corps with the highest Government Honour
have laid a wreath today on the grave of King Alexander I Karadjordjevic in the
Crypt of the St George Church in Topola. A wreath has also been laid by the
Karadjordjevic Family, led by the grandson of the King the Unifier Prince
Alexander. Afterwards, the Minister of Defence has inaugurated the exhibition
“Statesman and Warrior Path of King Alexander I” at the Gallery of King’s Peter
I House in Oplenac and in the Museum of the Army in Belgrade. He said that King
Alexander was a visionary but that this unification will be achieved in Brussels
and not in Belgrade.

The speaker: The commemoration of the death of King Alexander I who has been
assassinated seventy five years ago in Marseille during his visit to France, was
held in the Royal Mausoleum of Oplenac within the presence of President Boris

the Saint George Church by bishop Jovan of Sumadija. The commemoration was also

and HRH Prince Alexander II laid wreathes in Marseille, on the monument in
honour of King Alexander and French Minister of Foreign Affairs Louis Barthou
who both were assassinated during the tragic event seventy five years ago.
Minister Jeremic said that King Alexander was the first victim of the fascism
terror, and that this was a day of grief for Serbia and France.
Vuk Jeremic (Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia): The shots that hit our
King were shots to our country and to European peace. King Alexander was a man
with deep respect for history and tradition of his people, in the same time a
man with powerful progressive vision of unity and integrations and we may say
that he has been the first real European Statesman at the head of our country.

HRH Crown Prince Alexander II Karadjordjevic: I wish to thank a lot to the
French people here and to our Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Vuk Jeremic. To
remember that day, which was the first. He has been the first victim of fascism.

75 years from the assassination of King Alexander I Karadjordjevic
Speaker: Today it has been exactly 75 years since the assassination of King
Alexander I Karadjordjevic. Serbian President Tadic will lay a wreath at the
grave of King Alexander in St George Church in Oplenac, while Prince Alexander

Marseille at the place of the assassination. The assassination when French
Minister for Foreign Affairs Louis Barthou was also killed, has been organised

Nikolaj of Alaska. King Alexander Karadjordjevic, son of King Peter I and
Princess Zorka, was killed on October, 9th 1934 in Marseille by the Croatian
branch “Ustashi” and members of the Macedonian VMRO. His Remains were escorted
by hundreds of thousands of people, and were laid to rest on October 18th in the
Crypt of the St George’s Church in Oplenac in Topola. During the commemoration
of 75 years of the death of King Alexander I it has been announced that
President Tadic will lay a wreath on his grave in the Chruch in Oplenac. The
Ceremony will be attended by members of Diplomatic and Military Corps and the
Karadjordjevic Family. This will be the occasion of the opening of the
exhibition “Statesman and Warrior Path of King Alexander I”.
