BELGRADE - On November 3rd, Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander and Princess Kath-erine attended the memorial service marking the 42nd anniversary since the death of His Majesty King Peter II. The ceremony was served by the clergy of Sumadija Eparchy at the St. George Church in Oplenac.
HM King Peter II was the firstborn son of King Alexander I and Queen Maria of Yugoslavia. King Peter II was born in Belgrade on September 6, 1923. His Godparents were King George VI of the United Kingdom and his wife Queen Elizabeth, later the Queen Mother. His received his elementary education at The Royal Palace in Belgrade and went on to study at Sandroyd School in England.
He left the United Kingdom shortly after his father's assassination in 1934. Since King Peter II was only 11 years old at the time and thus underage, a regency was formed with three regents including his great uncle Prince Paul of Yugoslavia.
During the Second World War HM King Peter II was forced to leave the country along with the Yugoslav
Government - first to Greece and Palestine and later to Egypt. King Peter II joined other exiled monarchs and political leaders from Nazi occupied Europe in London in June 1941. During the war King Peter was regarded by the people of Yugoslavia as the symbol of resistance against Nazi oppression. The King completed his education at Cambridge University and went on to join the Royal Air Force.
In 1947, the new communist government took away the citizenship and confiscated the property of the Royal Family. During his exile HM King Peter II lived in London with his wife whom he had married in 1944, Princess Alexandra of Greece and Denmark, the daughter of King Alexander of the Hellenes and Aspasia Manos. His son and heir Crown Prince Alexander was born in 1945.
HM King Peter II spent the last years of his life in the United States. After a long and grave illness, HM King Peter II died on November 3, 1970 at Denver Hospital, Colorado. He was buried at the St. Sava Monastery Church in Libertyville, IL. He is the only king buried in the United States.
The King's remains will be transferred to the Karadjordjevic dynasty Mausoleum of St. George in Oplenac, Serbia where His Majesty will join other members of The Royal Family.
