Prince Alexander Karadjordjevic about the celebration of the First Serbian Uprising Bicentennial

Alexander Karadjordjevic: This date marks the establishment of modern Serbian state. It was an important event that traced a new era in the history of Serbia. Although the First Uprising did not entirely fulfill all expectations, it represented a great symbol for the future and the process of national awakening. My ancestor Karadjordje was a brave man and he took this action.

Branko Mikasinovic: What other plans are there for marking of this crucial event in Serbian history?

A.K.: Several ceremonies are scheduled, including the premiere of a special film about Karadjordje. Near the house where Karadjordje used to live, in Oplenac, I met the actor who played the role of Karadjordje. His resemblance to Karadjordje is impressive and I am very proud of the whole project.

B.M.: It is planned to mark the reestablishment of Serbian state during the whole year. What other celebrations are organized?

A.K.: A ceremony in Oplenac, on the grave of Karadjordje, where a wrath is going to be laid by the Serbian Patriarch Pavle. Then a ceremony in Orasac, on the site where the First Serbian Uprising broke out, with participation of the representatives of the Church and the Government. I see marking of this great jubilee in connection with the current efforts of Serbia to reintegrate into Europe and maintain friendly relationships with the USA. I wish Serbia to be a modern and democratic country that will respect all religions and ethnic groups. In addition we must work on the revival of our economy, in which, I am convinced, we are going to succeed. It is also my wish for our democracy to consolidate, and to have new jobs. In my opinion, it is of utmost importance. We should also perhaps mark this jubilee with new and strong impulses for the revival of our economy. In addition, we must have political stability, without which there is no future.
