PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT

TRADITIONAL HUMANITARIAN FASHION SHOW AT THE WHITE PALACE

Belgrade, 8 February 2010 –HRH Crown Princess Katherine Foundation in cooperation with Deputy Mayor of Belgrade, Mrs. Radmila Hrustanovic, will host sixth Humanitarian Fashion Show, traditionally held on Valentine’s Day, on Sunday, 14February at 7.30 pm, at the White Palace. The Fashion Show will be organized by Modeling Agency Fabrika.

This year the haute couture collection of the renowned Italian designer Renato Balestra will be presented, as well as the Prêt-à-Porter collection of Serbian designer Predrag Vukasinovic and the first children’s collection by our most renowned fashion designer Dragana Ognjenovic.

All proceeds from this event will benefit breast cancer campaign.

Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumour and one of the main causes of premature death of women in Serbia. Every year 4000 new cases are registered, which represents more that a quarter of all malignant diseases for women. Every year more then 1600 women die of breast cancer, which is 18% of cancer death rate.

Breast cancer is usually discovered in the late stage for women in Serbia. At the time of diagnosis, for more than half the woman a spread of disease from cancer to regional lymph nodes, skin, or metastases already exists which significantly reduces their chances for cure.

Measured in years of life lost, breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women in Serbia aged 25-44 and in the third place as the cause of death in women aged 45-64 years.

The average age of women at the time of diagnosis of breast cancer is 57 years, with 29% of women younger than 50 years, and 21% aged 40-49 years and 8% below 40 years.

Breast cancer screening is conducted by organizing a mammography examination of healthy women at a certain age. Detection of breast cancer at an early stage, in addition to the high chances of cure, permits avoidance of surgical intervention, faster recovery, reducing disability, better quality of life and reduction costs of treatment.

This humanitarian show is one of many activities of the HRH Princess Katherine Foundation, which are dedicated to raising the public awareness about early detection and preventive treatment of breast cancer, as well as reducing the number of deaths of women from this disease, which can be prevented or cured if detected on time.
