100th Anniversary of King Peter I Coronation The King Liberator and Founder of Democracy in Serbia Belgrade Tuesday 21 September 2004. The 100th anniversary of His Majesty King Peter I was honored throughout the day first with a liturgy in the cathedral where he was crowned one hundred years ago followed by a memorial service. The great grandson of King Peter I, Crown Prince Alexander, led The Royal Family wife his wife HRH Crown Princess Katherine and their son HRH Prince Philip. Other members of The Royal Family were present for the liturgy Princess Linda and her son Prince Milhaljo, and Princess Elizabeth. The honor guard of the Guard Brigade of Serbia and Montenegro turned out in respect of their former Commander in Chief. This was an important moment in history of Serbia as it was the first time since the end of World War Two that a former head of state was fully officially honored by the state. HRH Crown Prince Alexander then laid a wreath on the bust of King Peter I in the school of King Peter I nearby the cathedral. All the students and teachers were present and a folk ensemble performed a beautiful programme. His Holiness Patriarch Pavle and Crown Prince Alexander then gave a reception nearby in the Patriarchate. The reception was attended by Religious Leaders, the government and diplomatic corps. His Excellency President Boris Tadic of Serbia and Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander, Crown Princess Katherine and Prince Philip then viewed together the original film of the coronation in the Cinema of the State Film Archives. Their Royal Highnesses then went to Oplenac (40 minutes outside Belgrade) where The Royal Mausoleum is located and Crown Prince Alexander laid a wreath on the tomb of King Peter I. The honor guard of the Guard Brigade of Serbia and Montenegro was there too. Their Royal Highnesses then returned to The Royal palace in Belgrade where they hosted a reception that was attended by Religious Leaders (Serbian Orthodox, Muslim and Roman Catholic), Government, diplomatic corps and prominent guests from many institutions. King Peter I was the founder of democracy in Serbia and heroic leader of the armed forces in the Balkan Wars. He was affectionately known as the King Liberator Crown Prince Alexander is the son of King Peter II of Yugoslavia. He is also the grandson of King Alexander of Hellenes and Apasia Manos.
