A
GREAT HUMANITARIAN EVENT IN
PITTSBURG
U.S. Steel raised over 140 000
dollars for the reconstruction of
the Health Centre “Saint Luke’s” in
Smederevo
Pittsburg, 12 May 2005 – Their
Royal Highnesses Crown Prince
Alexander II and Princess Katherine
attended a magnificent humanitarian
event in Pittsburg organized by the
U.S. Steel (United Steel
Corporation) last night.
The present were addressed by Mr.
John H. Goodish, the Executive Vice
President and CEO of U.S. Steel.
“U.S. Steel organized this
gathering – not to draw attention to
itself – but to help those in need –
a philosophy that we have followed
since our very beginning. We believe
that businesses – as good corporate
citizens – have a responsibility to
the communities in which they
operate, and to the institutions
that serve those communities. St.
Luke’s Medical Center – the
principal medical services provider
in Smederevo – is one such
institution. That is why we are here
tonight, ‘’ emphasized Mr. John H.
Goodish.
Afterwards HRH Princess Katherine
and HRH Crown Prince Alexander II
addressed the present.
“Citizens of Smederevo are
fortunate to have a company like
U.S.Steel in their town. Everyone
who has come to Serbia for business
should follow this remarkable
example. This shows how people care
not only for their own benefit but
for the benefit of others as
well,’’”- said HRH Princess
Katherine in her addressing.
‘’We are delighted that U.S.
Steel is in Serbia, in Smederevo,
and we would like to see many more
U.S. firms come over. They will be
warmly welcome. We hope that this
hospital will become one of the best
hospitals in Serbia’’-emphasized HRH
Crown Prince Alexander II in his
addressing the present.
Beside Their Royal Highnesses
more than 75 business partners of
U.S. Steel were present at the
dinner, which was dedicated to
raising funds in the organization of
“Lifeline New York” and Foundation
of HRH Princess Katherine, under the
patronage of HRH Princess Katherine.
More than 140 000 dollars will be
directed to the renovation of the
Health Centre “Saint Luke’s” in
Smederevo, which recently suffered
some significant damage due to s
fire, when the roof of the hospital
was burned. The funds will also be
directed to the reconstruction of
one part of this hospital.
The Health Center “Saint Luke’s”
in Smederevo is a regional health
institution that provides health
protection for 160 thousand citizens
– not only from the city of
Smederevo, but also the citizens of
neighbor municipalities, as well as
to a large number of refugees and
locally displaced persons resided in
the Municipality of Smederevo. It
was built in 1866 and two additional
structures were built in 1938 and
1961. Since then, almost nothing was
invested in the equipping and
maintenance of this important
regional health institution. This
Centre has the following units:
General Hospital, Health Home and
Joint Service and around 1.400
employees. Among them are 240
doctors and 40 dentists. The Health
Centre treats 11 000 patients a
year. The hospital has 427 beds and
performs 240.412 physical
examinations and services 1.592.568
people. Annually, 3.634 operations
and 7.890 dialyses are performed.
The Humanitarian Organization
“Lifeline New York” and U.S. Steel
hope that the management and the
staff of “Saint Luke’s” Hospital
will improve this health institution
to the benefit of the citizens of
Smederevo and the whole region
thanks to the funds raised in
America.
Their Royal Highnesses Crown
Prince Alexander II and Princess
Katherine expressed a great pleasure
to see such a great interest for
this humanitarian project showed by
Mr. John Goodish, the Executive Vice
President and CEO of U.S. Steel in
Pittsburg who signed an agreement in
2003 about the strategic partnership
between Sartid from Smederevo, U.S.
Steel Kosice and the Government of
the Republic of Serbia. This
agreement brought a mutual benefit
in which the Serbian concern of
black metallurgy got a chance to
make utilize its capacities,
increase productivity, improve the
quality of products and sell them
abroad. This sent a clear message to
other investors, a call for
investments into Serbian economy.
