“SVETI LUKA” HEALTH CENTER IN SMEDEREVO RECONSTRUCTED
Belgrade, 16 November 2006. – HRH Crown Prince Alexander
II and Mr. Douglas Matthews,
US
Steel Serbia general manager, visited the reconstructed health centre
“Sveti Luka” in Smederevo.
Funds for reconstruction of the health centre were raised
at a charity event in Pittsburg in May of 2005, organised by
US Steel Corporation,
Lifeline New York, charity organization, and HRH Princess Katherine
Foundation. Beside Their Royal Highnesses, the ceremony was attended by
numerous partners of US Steel Corporation who wanted to support this
activity.
HRH Crown Prince Alexander II stressed in his speech that
it is a pleasure for him to see that large and successful firms have started
helping and investing into communities in which they operate, and that this
introduces a new way of thinking that will be beneficial to all sides.
The ceremony was also attended by Mr. Saša Radosavljević,
Mayor of Smederevo, Mr. Douglas Matthews, US Steel Serbia general manager,
Mrs. Dragana Aleksić-Milovanović, Sveti Luka health centre manager, and
staff of the health centre.
Health Centre Sveti Luka was built in 1866, and in 1938
and 1961 another two objects were built next to it. Since then, almost
nothing was invested into maintenance of this important regional health
institution which provides services to 160,000 people – not only from
Smederevo, but partly from neighbouring municipalities and to many refugees
and displaced persons who at this moment live on the territory of Smederevo
municipality.
