CROWN PRINCE ALEXANDER LAYS WREATH AT MONUMENT TO
UNKNOWN SOLDIER
Belgrade, 15 September 2008 - On the 90th anniversary of
the breach of the Thessaloniki Front in 1918, wreaths were laid at the
monument to the Unknown Soldier on Mt. Avala with highest military and other
honours.
Wreaths were laid by Admiral Jovan Grbavac, envoy of the
President of Serbia, Professor Dr. Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, Speaker of the
Serbian Parliament, HRH Crown Prince Aleksandar accompanied by Professor Dr.
Dragoljub Kavran, member of the Crown Council, military envoys of France,
Russia, and Greece, delegation of Serbian Veteran Combatants 1912-1920,
followed by admirals and generals, and reserve officers.
After the laying of wreaths, a reception was held at the
Avala Hotel.
Serbia suffered enormous casualties during World War One
as it fought on the side of the Allies. It lost 450,000 troops and 650,000
citizens. The Breach of the Thessaloniki front in 1918 was one of the
decisive battles that ended the First World War. |
