PROF. KALANGOS OPERATES IN SERBIA AGAIN
Belgrade, 13 July 2009 – Prof. Dr. Afksendios
Kalangos, Head of cardiovascular surgery at the University Hospital
in Geneva was from 8 to 12 July in a sixth working visit to Serbia,
as a guest of Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander and
Crown Princess Katherine.
During this visit Prof. Kalangos operated on four
children patients of the University Children’s Clinic in Tirsova and
two adults with congenital heart disease at the Institute for
Cardiovascular Diseases at the Clinical Centre of Serbia. All
patients are recovering nicely.
The Operating Unit for patients with congenital
heart diseases was opened on 9 December 2008 at the initiative of
Prof. Dr. Kalangos and Crown Princess Katherine, as a joint venture
of the Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases of the Clinical Centre
of Serbia and University Children’s Clinic in Tirsova.
This project was launched thanks to the generous
help of a friend of Their Royal Highnesses, Mr. Alexander Niklan and
the Foundation of Prof. Dr. Kalangos “Hearts for All”, as well as
the Republic Fund for Health Insurance. As a part of this project
the intensive care unit and day hospital were reconstructed, built
and equipped with the most modern medical equipment and beds for
post-operative treatment for patients with congenital heart disease.
Professor Kalangos besides operating on the
patients of Serbia; put much effort in the training of the Serbian
medical staff. Professor Kalangos he invited Serbian surgeon Dr
Petar Vukicevic from the Institute for Cardio Vascular Diseases at
the Clinical Centre of Serbia to finish a specialization time at the
University Hospital in Geneva. Dr Vukicevic went to Geneva in April
and will attend a one year programme, following that he will come
back to Serbia to implement his knowledge and experience. |
