THIRD SERBIAN DIASPORA MEDICAL CONFERENCE 2012

“MEDICINE WORLDWIDE AND IN SERBIA”

Belgrade, 15 June 2012 – The “THIRD SERBIAN DIASPORA MEDICAL CONFERENCE 2012” organized by HRH Crown Princess Katherine Foundation and Lifeline Humanitarian Organization, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health of Republic of Serbia, Ministry of Religion and Diaspora of Republic of Serbia, Medical Faculty of Belgrade, Serbian Medical Association and World Health Organization (WHO) was officially open today in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Belgrade. The aim of the conference is to improve cooperation between doctors in Serbia and doctors of Serbian origin working abroad, with institutions and individuals who are essentially important for the quality of medical care in Serbia, as well as networking among Serbian intellectual values in the field of health with the Serbian academic society abroad, as well as with prominent foreign experts in the field of medicine.

During the opening ceremony speeches were delivered by:

His Grace Atanasije, Bishop of Hvostano, on behalf of His Holiness the Patriarch of Serbia Irinej who blessed the gathering.
HRH Crown Prince Alexander pointed out that Continued Medical Education is most important for development of the health system in Serbia. “I would like to especially thank all Institutions and entities that supported this gathering , HRH Crown Princess Katherine Foundation and Hyatt Regency Hotel for all their great help”, added the Crown Prince.

Prof. Dr Zoran Stankovic, Minister of Health, Republic of Serbia said: “The experts that this Conference gathered are the pride of our country and I sincerely hope that the new Government will support this great endeavor and help developing it on a greater level”.

Prim dr Predrag Tojic, State Secretary at the Ministry of Religion and Diaspora emphasized that there are over 10,000 Serbian doctors that live and work abroad and their love and devotion towards their homeland is progressively increasing each year thanks to this Conference. The Crown Princess Katherine recognized these values and helped to raise standards in the field of medicine.

The Dean of the Medical Faculty, Prof. Dr Vladimir Bumbasirevic as well as Prof. dr Nikola Grujic, Dean of the Novi Sad Medical School pointed out the importance of this gathering especially in connecting medical experts from abroad with their colleagues in Serbia.

Dr Dorit Nitzan, Head of WHO (World Health Organization) Country Office in Serbia, Manager of Public Health Services for South Eastern Europe said that Serbian doctors are blessing for the Medical Institutions worldwide, pointing out “I am in Serbia for over seven years and during that period I have witnessed the development of the medical system in Serbia and I must admit I feel privileged to live and work here”, praising the organizers of the Serbian Diaspora Medical Conference Dr. Nitzan said that she would like appoint HRH Crown Princess Katherine as WHO Goodwill Ambassador.

HRH Crown Princess Katherine thanked all partners and supporters of this gathering pointing out the importance of the joint effort in connecting Serbian Doctors with their colleagues from all around the globe. “Networking is a crucial element for progress and finally Serbia has the opportunity to be recognized worldwide”.

Jekic, EU/EIB TA Team National Coordinator – Reconstruction of the 4 Clinical Centres in Serbia, “The advantage to have a professional Diaspora” presented by Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Laaser, DTM&H, MPH , Head of the Section “International Public Health”, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Bielefeld, World Federation of Public Health Associations, “United States Health Care. A Conundrum and a Challenge” presented by Ivan Ciric, M.D., FACS, Professor Emeritus, Neurosurgery, Northwestern University Medical School, Clinical Professor, Neurosurgery, University of Chicago, North Shore University Health Systems, “Publishing” presented by Maja Zecevic, PhD, MPH, North American based Editor of The Lancet Medical Journal, United States, “Serbian medical journals - from the scientific periphery to the Web of Science” presented by Prof. dr Silva Dobric, editor-in-chief of the magazine Vojnosanitetski pregled (Military Medical Review), “Translational medicine: how to provide a bridge between science and clinic and create a new generation of doctors” presented by Dr. Tatjana Stankovic Taylor, University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, “Genetics in medicine – Curent situation“ presented by Prof. Dr. Dusica Babovic Vuksanovic, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, United States, “Hypernatremia and it’s management“ presented by Prof. Dr. Pierre Marc Bouloux, The London Clinic, United Kingdom, ”Craniofacial Trauma and Reconstruction: Current State-of-the-Art” presented by Dr. Branko Bojovic, University of Maryland/Shock Trauma Centre, Baltimore, Maryland, United States, “Twenty year experience of English studies at Medical Faculty in Novi Sad” presented by Prof.dr Nikola Grujic, Dean at the School of Medicine, Novi Sad, and Prof. Dr. Goran Marusic from Clinical Centre Novi Sad, “English studies at the Belgrade University School of Medicine” presented by Prof. Dr. Gordana Teofilovski-Parapid, Belgrade University School of Medicine followed by a lecture from Dr Sava Nenic.

After plenary sessions three workshops started with themes Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery,  Mental Health and Reproduction and Pediatrics.

In the pediatrics workshop of the Conference, Professor Tatjana Stankovic-Taylor from Great Britain presented the latest concepts of genetic treatment of leukemia of young age, while Professor Jelica Predojevic-Samadrdzic from Banja Luka talked about the latest accomplishments in the classical treatment of leukemia. On the subject of diagnostics and treatment of frequent genetic disease, neurofibromatosis, at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in the United States, Professor Srdjan Babovic from the Mayo Clinic will speak as well as pediatric and genetic Professor Dusica Babovic-Vuksanovic. The modern concept of treating sepsis in the units of intensive care will be presented by Professor Savo Nenic from the Unite States, surgical reconstruction of congenital defects of the ear will be presented by Professor Srdjan Babovic from Mayo clinic. Editor of the prestigious science magazine, Dr Maja Zacevic, will give lecture about possibilities and needs of scientific publishing.
In the Mental Health and Reproductionworkshop focus was on the fact that every gynecologist, obstetrician, perinatologist is obliged to take care about of the mental health of their patients, because only preserved mental health will provide successful reproduction. Reproduction and mental health are in an unbreakable bond and the causal relation. Reproduction is responsible for continuing of our species and creation of offspring, which is the main purpose of human population. Reproduction is heavily depending on the preservance of the integrity of mental health, and good mental health is conditioned by healthy reproduction.
