TRH CROWN PRINCE ALEKSANDAR AND CROWN PRINCESS KATHERINE HAND OVER “THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARDS” TO THE STUDENTS OF THE INTERNATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL IN BELGRADE

Belgrade, 25 October 2002 – TRH Crown Prince Aleksandar and Crown Princess Katherine handed over the “Duke of Edinburgh Young People’s Award” to the students of the International High School Belgrade at the Royal Palace in Dedinje today.

The International High School in Belgrade was founded in 1997 and is the only licensed center for this Award in the Balkans, and it is the first time this year that the Award is handed over in Serbia.

The awarded were six students who excelled in taking part in social programs for the orphanages and homes for mentally challenged children, as well as in the scouts’ camp in Ravna Gora.

The ceremony was attended by the Director of the International High School in Belgrade Mr. Martin David Scott with his associates, the business secretary of the British Embassy in Belgrade Mr. David Webb, the director of the British Council Mr. Chris Gibson, parents of the award winners and the students of this school. As one of the parents, among the invitees, there was the ambassador of Zimbabwe, His Excellency Mr. Lloyd Gundu with his wife.

This prestigious international award for the students outside Great Britain was established in 1956 by His Royal Highness Prince Fillip, Duke of Edinburgh, who is a cousin of the Crown Prince’s mother, the late Queen Alexandra.

The award is meant for the students of 14 to 25, who excelled in the extra curricular activities, like sports, hobbies, participating in different social programs, etc.

Crown Prince Aleksandar first welcomed the guests and congratulated the award winners.

The Crown Prince particularly commended the program in which the contestants took part, and, pointing out the importance and long tradition of the award, added that he was the student of Gordonstoun School in Scotland, at the time when the Award was established. This school was also attended by the Duke of Edinburgh himself, as well as the Prince of Wales.

The School’s director, Mr. Martin David Scott thanked Their Royal Highnesses for their hospitality and the honor to award the students.

After the ceremony, the guests took a tour of the Royal and the White Palace.
