LITURGY IN OPLENAC IN COMMEMORATION OF KING PETER’S DEATH 82 YEARS AGO

Belgrade, August 16th, 2003. – The liturgy and requiem for King Peter I was served today in his endowment Saint Djordje Church in Oplenac in commemoration of his death 82 years ago. The liturgy and requiem were served by His Grace Bishop of Sumadija Jovan together with other clergy.

King Peter I died on this day on August 16th, 1921. He was buried next to his great grandfather Karadjordje in Oplenac church.

After he had come to power, and during his eighteen years of reign a new period in the history of Serbian state had begun - the era of democracy and liberal rule. His reign is remembered, in history, as an era of constitutionalism and democratic principles.

On a behalf of Their Royal Highnesses, member of the Royal Chancellery professor Ivan Antic attended the ceremony, laid the wreath and lit the candle and commemorated late King by minute of silence.
